There are not many days in the year as popular as Memorial Day Weekend. The idea of the start of the summer season, BBQs, and the outdoors leaves a feeling of fun and excitement. Being Veterans, we here at MericanMen.com love nothing more than spending our Memorial Day weekend outside.

Although we love the idea of being outside, sometimes life keeps us so busy we fail to make plans early enough to enjoy the holiday. If that sounds like you, don’t worry, we got you covered. Today we put together our list of ideas of fun things you can do outside this Memorial Day weekend.

Fun things you can do this Memorial Day Weekend

Take out the kayak

If you love the outdoors and don’t own a kayak, get one today! There are tons of Memorial Day Sales on kayaks and kayaking gear deals online and at sporting good stores.

Should you already own a kayak, take it off of your kayak stand, clean it up and take her out. Being that Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends for boating, be sure to check your kayaking gear to make sure it’s all in good working order. One of the most important things to remember if you go kayaking this weekend is to learn how to re-enter a kayak after it tips. Since it is a busy boating holiday, large and speedy boats are known to capsize kayaks.

Set up camp

As you know, BBQ’s are extremely popular over Memorial Day weekend, so grill your Memorial Day BBQ over a campfire at camp.

If you haven’t already booked your favorite campsite, you may have trouble finding a spot.

I realize last-minute camping can be a pain in the butt, but camping on Memorial Day weekend is something the whole family will enjoy. Although many popular campgrounds are booked, you can still find great places to camp. If your favorite campground is already taken, set up camp in your back yard.

Camping in your backyard is a lot of fun. It gives you a chance to see if any of your camping gear needs to be replaced before your first camping trip of the summer.

If you plan to camp this holiday weekend, here are some things you can do to keep the kids busy.

Hiking

There’s not a lot of things in life more therapeutic than hiking. And, there are plenty of advantages of hiking on Memorial Day weekend. Some advantages are:

  1. You don’t need a reservation
  2. Lowers stress levels
  3. Improve mood
  4. Since it’s exercise it’s not as crowded as the beach
  5. Inspires creatitvity
  6. Hiking burns a considerable amount of calories

As of now, the weather forecast looks good throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Remember to stay hydrated if you plan to hike this weekend. Pack plenty of water or use camping water bags that fit in perfectly in your hiking backpacks.

There are many other fun things you can do outside this memorial day. For example:

  • Fishing
  • Water sports (remember to check water temperatures and dress appropriately)
  • Backyard sports like corn hole
  • Grill/BBQ, and
  • Paintball
